It has been three years since Michigan State University was impacted by the violence that took place on the evening of Feb. 13, 2023. Three years later, the Spartan community continues to pause, reflect and embrace one another — remembering the students lost and honoring those injured.

Remembrance events began Friday afternoon. The Center for Community Engaged Learning hosted a “Caring Through Service” opportunity for community building, service and advocacy at the Breslin Center Hall of History. There, Spartan community members were able to support mental health initiatives, create meaningful connections and give back to the community.

“As executive director of the MSU Community Engaged Learning center, I am deeply grateful to the staff, students and community partners who continue to come together in service of one another,” said Renee Miller Zientek. “This year, we are especially pleased to be able to provide winter essentials kits to support basic needs and community mental health and wellness kits to MSU Counseling and Psychiatric Services, reinforcing our shared commitment to care, connection and well-being.”

Throughout the afternoon, indoor and outdoor support spaces on campus provided a source of comfort, warmth and togetherness for many. Community members were able to stop in at the Breslin Center Hall of History, the MSU Alumni Chapel or the resource and support tent near the Grand River parking ramp, where individuals could pick up luminary kits (white paper bags with green electric tea lights), grab a cup of hot cocoa or inquire about mental health resources and support.

Later in the evening, a remembrance concert and moment of silence was held to honor the lives that were lost and those who were injured three years ago before the bells of Beaumont Tower rang out from 8:10 p.m. to 8:25 p.m. Beaumont Tower, the MSU Union and Berkey Hall were lit green for the evening and overnight hours.

“The anniversary of February 13th generates a wide range of emotions for the Michigan State community, along with the reminder of how we have displayed resilience and love for one another during a really difficult time,” said Associated Students of Michigan State University President Kathryn Harding. “Spartans are the strongest when we are together. On this third anniversary, my hope for everyone is that you will reflect, be in community and heal in the way that is best for your own journey.”

MSU’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services and Employee Assistance Program are always available to provide supportive resources for students, faculty and staff.
