Kevin Dylong: The man behind the landscaping

If you’ve ever strolled across MSU’s campus and paused to admire a perfectly edged lawn, a vibrant flower bed or the peaceful elegance of West Circle’s tree-lined paths—you’ve likely seen the quiet handiwork of Kevin Dylong.

As a gardener in MSU’s Landscape Services division, Dylong is responsible for maintaining one of the most iconic stretches of campus. “My individual gardening area is 53 acres in size,” he said, “including 15 buildings like the library, the union, Beaumont Tower, Cowles House, the music building, and the West Circle dorms.” From pruning and mowing to invasive plant removal and leaf cleanup, his work helps shape the green heart of MSU.

With more than 25 years of experience, Dylong’s roots in horticulture go deep. He got his start in his father’s landscaping business before earning a degree in horticulture and landscape design from Lansing Community College and Michigan State University. “I’ve always enjoyed working outdoors,” he said. “And I like working with plants.”

His commitment hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Kevin effectively manages the gardens with very high standards,” said supervisor Scott Feick. “His ability to juggle various responsibilities shows his dedication and efficiency.” Colleague Seamus Fry echoed the sentiment: “Kevin is a great gardener and provides campus with excellent customer service.”

Dylong’s schedule shifts with the seasons—early mornings from spring through fall, and even earlier during Michigan’s icy winters. “From November to April, all Landscape employees are on call 24 hours a day,” he said. “There’s always the potential for inclement weather.”

Rain or shine, snow or sun, Kevin Dylong is one of the dedicated professionals working behind the scenes to keep MSU beautiful, one garden bed at a time.
