MSU announces closure of Spartan Village Apartments

Celebration and memorabilia opportunities planned

Michigan State University announces the closure of Spartan Village, a once-bustling on-campus apartment complex that played a significant role in the university’s post-war growth and community life. The complex is located near Harrison and Mount Hope roads on the southwest end of campus.

Spartan Village Apartments

At its peak, Spartan Village offered approximately 1,500 apartment units and served as a vibrant home for generations of Spartans. Originally developed between the 1950s and 1960s, the complex was designed to meet the urgent housing needs of a surging student population, many of whom were returning veterans seeking education through the G.I. Bill. Spartan Village quickly became a central part of campus life, especially for married students and families, ushering in an era when children playing outside apartment doors was a common sight on campus.

Today, the facilities are overwhelmed by a variety of end-of-life problems, including deteriorated buildings and piping and other mechanical issues that are affecting water, steam and heat. After more than 15 years of thoughtful review and updates where possible, MSU officials determined the facilities could only be improved so much and no longer be maintained. The Department of Residence Education and Housing Services let remaining residents know in February 2024 that apartment leases would end May 15, 2025.

To honor the legacy of Spartan Village, planning is underway for a community celebration in fall 2025. The event will bring together former residents, families and friends to share memories and celebrate the unique role the Spartan Village played in shaping the MSU experience. MSU is currently gathering resident stories to be displayed during the celebration and submitted to MSU Archives. Stories and interest in the community celebration can be submitted through this submission form.

MSU is also working on plans to allow previous residents and community members to purchase select commemorative items from the complex, such as address plaques, through the MSU Surplus and Recycling Center. Those interested should monitor the MSU Surplus and Recycling Center website beginning in late summer.
