Feedback sought on Feb. 13 memorial design finalists

Michigan State University is inviting members of the Spartan community to provide their thoughts on the three final proposals for the permanent Feb. 13 memorial.

The memorial will serve as a central location for families, loved ones, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members to visit and reflect, grieve and honor those lost, injured, and all impacted by the violence of Feb. 13, 2023.

The Feb. 13 Permanent Memorial Planning Committee has created a survey where students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members can review the three finalists’ designs and then provide feedback. The survey closes March 31.

More information on designs and artists, including images and a video presentation, can be found at the Spartans Together website. Additionally, poster displays of each proposal will be set up at locations across campus, including the MSU Library in March.

Based on community feedback gathered in 2023, the memorial will be located at one of two locations:

  • Sleepy Hollow between Beaumont Tower and the Music Practice Building
  • Old Horticulture Garden located near the Student Services Building

The memorial committee, made up of students, faculty, staff and community liaisons, has continued to gather input from the Spartan community through the planning process. Additionally, MSU’s Office for Resource and Support Coordination also is having conversations with those directly impacted.

After the public comment period, the memorial committee will summarize responses and, in coordination with the Public Art on Campus Committee, recommend a final design. Work to construct the permanent memorial is planned to start in late spring/summer 2025.
