Feb. 13, 2025: A day of pause, reflection, community

It has been two years since Michigan State University was forever changed by the violence that took place on the evening of Feb. 13, 2023. Now, two years later, the Spartan community endures in ways that bring hope, comfort and healing as it takes time to remember the students lost and honor those injured in the violence.

Remembrance events began Thursday afternoon. The Center for Community Engaged Learning hosted a “Caring Through Service” opportunity meant to provide a comforting space to build community, act in service and learn more about advocacy at the Breslin Center Hall of History. There, students helped assemble essential needs kits for Community Mental Health, made wellness kits and friendship bracelets as well as learned ways to advocate for issues that matter to them.

“As the executive director of the MSU Community Engaged Learning Center, I am grateful for the staff and partners who are coming together to make this a meaningful experience,” said Renee Brown. “I encourage all Spartans to join, be in community with one another and support well-being for ourselves and those around us.”

Throughout the afternoon at various locations on campus, tented and heated spaces provided a sense of warmth and togetherness. Volunteers were on hand to help provide mental health resources and support. Luminary kits (white paper bags with green electric tea lights) also were available for pickup. These small tokens of remembrance later adorned areas surrounding the MSU Union, Berkey Hall, Beaumont Tower and The Spartan statue during the evening hours. Students and community members also provided feedback on permanent memorial design proposals at these tented spaces. A public online survey to share feedback is available through the end of March.

A moment of silence was held during the evening hours to honor the lives that were lost and those who were injured two years ago, before the bells of Beaumont Tower rang out from 8:10 p.m. to 8:25 p.m. Beaumont Tower, the MSU Union and Berkey Hall were lit green for the evening and overnight hours.

“Feb. 13 brings a complicated array of emotions for the Spartan community across the world,” said Associated Students of Michigan State University President Connor Le. “Days like today are a reminder that we are the strongest when united and supporting one another. I hope everyone is able to take time to reflect, give back to the community and heal in whatever way that serves you best.”

MSU’s Counseling and Psychiatric Services and Employee Assistance Program are always available to provide supportive resources for students, faculty and staff.
