Ask Dr. Brown: How do I protect myself and others from respiratory illnesses

With respiratory viruses like the flu, RSV and COVID-19 circulating, it’s important to take steps to protect yourself and those around you. These viruses spread through droplets when people cough, sneeze or even talk, as well as through contact with contaminated surfaces.

Start with the basics: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose and mouth, which are easy entry points for viruses. If soap isn’t available, use a hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

Stay up to date on vaccinations for COVID-19 and the flu, as they’re your best defense against severe illness. Vaccines are recommended for most people, especially those with underlying health conditions or frequent exposure to others, like in workplaces or public settings. In crowded indoor spaces, consider wearing a well-fitted mask, especially if virus activity is high. And remember to clean frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, keyboards and phones.

Finally, if you’re feeling unwell, stay home until you feel better for 24 hours to prevent spreading illness to others. These simple habits can go a long way in keeping everyone healthy this season.
