Fall Welcome: What I wish I knew

Spartan seniors share advice for a strong start

Starting as a new student at Michigan State University is exciting — and maybe a little overwhelming. From navigating a campus the size of a small city to finding your community, the first few weeks can be a whirlwind. That’s why we asked senior Spartans to share the tips they wish they’d known during their own Fall Welcome Week experience. Their wisdom can help first-year students start strong, stay grounded and make the most of their MSU experience.

“Confidence isn’t a prerequisite: it’s something you build by saying yes anyway.”

“I wish I had known that it’s okay to show up before you feel ready. Confidence isn’t a prerequisite: it’s something you build by saying yes anyway. The people who seem sure of themselves are usually just taking the same shaky first steps. Ask the hard questions. Let curiosity lead. That’s how you'll grow and make the most of college.” — Jasnoor Kaur, Farmington Hills, Michigan

“Try new things — and don’t be afraid to move on.”

“I wish I had known that it may take some time to find a student organization that is the right fit for you. Go to Sparticipation and pick a few groups that sound interesting and try them out! You don't have to stick with them forever."
Bonus tips: "Invite people you meet around campus to eat with you in dining halls and go to office hours to build connections with your professors." — Tatum Fettig, Grand Rapids, Michigan

“Keep putting yourself out there — your people are here.”

“My tip for Welcome Week is to keep putting yourself out there, even when you want to give up. You won't click with everyone you first meet and that's okay! You will find your people, so join clubs that cater to your interests and introduce yourself to people in your building. You never know who will become your Spartan bestie!” — Olivia Austin, Grand Rapids, Michigan

“Look for resources early — they’re everywhere.”

“I wish I had known that there are a lot of resources that can help you around campus. From your advisors helping with classes to clubs where you can make friends, there’s help for everyone if you take the time to look for it.”
Bonus tip: "Find your favorite study spot early — mine is the second floor of the library — and go to as many initial student club meetings as you can." — Maggie Carstensen, Howell, Michigan

“Connections can shape your entire MSU experience.”

“I wish I had known how much building connections can shape your MSU experience. Don’t be afraid to start conversations in class or join study groups; those friendships can make your academics more enjoyable and create a support system that lasts beyond graduation.” — Sophia Jundy, West Bloomfield, Michigan
