MSU prepares for record-breaking Take Your Child to Work Day April 11

Michigan State University is poised to set a record with over 50 learning, career and entertainment events planned for the 2024 Take Your Child to Work Day on April 11. This annual event, modeled after the national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, gives children a glimpse into the working world.

“MSU encourages employees to bring a special child or children in their life to campus to experience their workplace along with fun and educational experiences,” says WorkLife Office Director Jaimie Hutchison. “The day is designed to get kids on campus to learn more about what the adults in their lives do at work and to spark curiosity about the exciting things MSU has to offer.”

This year, over 45 units and departments stepped up to offer 53 tours and activities — a 19% increase over 2023. “We are grateful for the enthusiasm of the units and departments,” says Rachel Perez, WorkLife Office consultant and event coordinator. “It’s incredible to see the growth in activities and the participation across the university.”

Last year, Take Your Child to Work Day hosted 1,600 attendees, and projections for this year indicate that between 1,600 to 1,800 children and adults will participate. The event is geared toward kids ages 8-17, but all ages are welcome.

Activities range from ice skating and tackling obstacle courses to smashing nuclei and enjoying scavenger hunts. Animal lovers can visit with honeybees and bugs and even meet some cattle at the Dairy Cattle Teaching and Research Center. Some opportunities require closed-toe shoes or encourage bringing your own equipment. Download the program ahead of time to come prepared for the day’s activities. An information session on what to expect is available online.

MSU units and departments will host tours and activities from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 11 with a break for lunch 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. A highlight of Take Your Child to Work Day is the Central Certificate Ceremony at Shaw Hall Basement West Study Lounge from 12:15 to 1 p.m. where kids can take photos with Sparty and share a drawing of their dream job.
