MSU’s Demmer Center hits a bullseye with winter archery

If the winter chill is cramping your outdoor lifestyle, there’s a cure for cabin fever located south of Michigan State University’s campus that’s drawing crowds and arrows alike — the Demmer Center.

Tucked away on East Jolly Road, this state-of-the-art facility attracts people of all ages and skill levels looking to explore the ancient art of archery. From beginners picking up a bow for the first time to seasoned archers honing their skills, there’s an adventure waiting for everyone.

“We are open to help archers regardless of experience. Our main goal is to make archery a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone,” said Casey Christman, facility manager.

The center, open Tuesday through Sunday to the general public, offers a quiver full of options. It boasts seven archery ranges, which cater to various disciplines including recurve, compound and crossbow. For those seeking a blend of tradition and technology, there’s a video archery system called Techno Hunt. The animals are virtual, but the arrows are real. With over 700 scenarios, archers can experience a hunt from the safety and comfort of the indoors. And if you need equipment, there’s a full retail pro shop with premium archery equipment.

At its core, the Demmer Center is about people. Named after John Demmer, an MSU alum whose family’s legacy is interwoven with the university’s, the center reflects a passion for community and the great outdoors. It’s a place where families come together, where veterans find camaraderie and where Spartans of all abilities share a common ground. Seasonal archery leagues — there’s a winter league starting Jan. 17! — offer competition and company, and if you’re looking to improve your aim, the center boasts nationally recognized instructors from USA Archery and the National Collegiate Athletics Association.

“Archery is a fantastic social experience individuals of every age can have. You can shoot just a few arrows at a time or spend hours on the range,” Casey said. “It’s a physical activity people can enjoy for their entire life.”

The Demmer Center — just minutes from the main campus — offers a welcome escape where you can draw your bow and create memories with friends or family, one arrow at a time.
