The week in photos: June 24–30, 2024

By: Kelsie Lane

One of the things we look forward to most each summer on campus is Summer Circle Theatre, a series of performances produced by the MSU Department of Theatre. Taking place in the Summer Circle Theatre Courtyard between the MSU Auditorium and Kresge Art Center, the theatre series offers members of the MSU community an opportunity to watch a variety of free, entertaining and family-friendly performances by Department of Theatre students and faculty. As SCT finishes its 62nd season, this special edition of the Week in Photos takes a deep dive into the fantastic productions that were brought to life this year.

Rounding out the Summer Circle Theatre season is “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised] [again],” written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield and directed by Alexis Black. The production ambitiously attempts to retell all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays with three actors in around 90 minutes, resulting in a fast-paced, witty and hilarious comedy. Photo by Raymond L. History comes alive in “Digging up Dessa.” Written by Laura Schellhardt and directed by Dionne O’Dell, Dessa, a 21st-century girl, finds herself pairing up with Mary Anning, a 19th-century paleontologist, to deal with loss, dig up fossils and uncover secrets from the past and present alike. Students take center stage at Summer Circle Theatre, as actors Katherine Clemons, Ben Corsi, Cayla Hadaway and Rileigh Belle Wine, alongside scenic designer Kessler Jones, assistant scenic designer Matty Peterson and props artisan Julie Clampitt bring the museum set of “Digging up Dessa” to life. Musical theatre goes meta in “[title of show] (clean version),” with music and lyrics by Jeff Bowen and book by Hunter Bell, directed by Adam Yankowy. In the show, Jeff and Hunter, two struggling writers, attempt to create a new musical to submit to a festival occurring just three weeks away. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
