On May 24 leading into the Memorial Day holiday, veterans, leaders from across campus and guests from throughout the state gathered just west of Williams Hall to rededicate a memorial in honor of the 33 Spartans who fought and died in World War I. Originally dedicated on June 19, 1919, Memorial Grove is marked by a bronze plaque and a grove of 33 oak trees in commemoration of the soldiers’ service and sacrifice to our nation.
The MSU Student Veterans Resource Center, alongside the Department of Forestry, Infrastructure Planning and Facilities, the Army ROTC program, the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency and the Michigan National Guard, is revitalizing the memorial 105 years after its original dedication by adding a patio, flagpole area, detailed historical signage and benches for quiet reflection. The rededication was celebrated with the Posting of the Colors by the First Battalion, 125th Infantry and remarks from Michigan National Guard Brigadier General and MSU alumnus Jeffrey Terrill and Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Director Brian Love. The event was also attended by the family of U.S. Army Corporal William B. Lutz, one of the 33 M.A.C. students and alums honored. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
