“The Phoenix,” a sculpture by MSU alum Richard Tanner, features a stainless steel gazing sphere that gazes over the athletic fields at IM East. Completed in 2022, the sculpture resembles a phoenix rising from the ashes, symbolizing a beacon of hope and rising through the ashes — not only in athletics, but also in response to the artist’s personal struggles throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.
