Student view: What being a member of Tower Guard means to me as a nursing student

Haylie Pohlman is a second-year student in the College of Nursing and is a member of Tower Guard, a student organization dedicated to serving the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities at Michigan State University. Tower Guard collaborates with the RCPD to help scribe for exams, create more accessible textbooks, hold one-on-one tutoring, and build a more inclusive environment for all Spartans.

For months, I looked forward to the day I would receive my first ever stethoscope, pair of scrubs and nursing student badge; the day where I would truly be named as a nursing student. This enthralling day finally came upon start of the spring 2024 semester.

As a second-year MSU student in the College of Nursing, I went into this semester more excited than ever. As I mentioned previously, this is the semester where I entered nursing school. As this semester progresses, I am most excited for learning more about the human body and ways to help medical patients and their families. It has always been a dream of mine to be able to help and care for other people, and starting my nursing education is a step forward in this direction.

In April of 2023, I was inducted into the Tower Guard organization — another enthralling moment for me at MSU. I truly believe that being a part of this organization has changed my life and has provided me with so many amazing opportunities. Tower Guard works closely with the Resource Center for People with Disabilities, or RCPD, and offers opportunities like Spartan Study (a tutoring service), scribing, e-texting and social events through Spartan Ties. My enjoyment as a part of this organization last semester has led me to be even more ecstatic for what this upcoming semester has to hold. This March, for example, Tower Guard is holding a 5K run, where our goal is to raise both awareness and money for the RCPD.

In addition to my endeavors within the College of Nursing and Tower Guard, I am an active member in the Swim Club and Nursing Student Association. These involvements have motivated me in some way or another. For example, Swim Club pushes me to physically work hard to achieve goals, and Nursing Student Association has provided me with volunteer opportunities that allow me to give back to the community. Last semester, I started to volunteer weekly for a local food bank and I have continued to volunteer through this semester. In addition, being a part of these organizations has connected me to amazing people, and I am looking forward to connecting with even more people through our similar involvements.
