State Room honored by Wine Spectator for 18 consecutive years

The State Room Restaurant has been honored for its outstanding wine program in Wine Spectator’s 2023 Restaurant Awards, which celebrate the world’s best restaurants for wine.

“In a time of technological innovation, restaurants offer the human experience diners are hungry for—listening to their customers and offering personalized experience,” said Marvin R. Shanken, Editor and Publisher, Wine Spectator. “This annual issue celebrates the places where wine is at the top of that conversation. I’m pleased to congratulate all 3,505 restaurants for their dedication to wine and wine-loving diners.”

Launched in 1981, the Restaurant Awards represent the world’s only program focused exclusively on restaurant wine service. They are assigned on three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award, with 2,001; 1,411; and 93 winners this year in each respective category.

“The State Room is honored to be recognized among the world’s top wine lists,” Operations Manager Elayna Creed expressed. “With a diverse collection of bottles from vintners all over the globe, we are dedicated to providing an equally exceptional dining experience to everyone. This summer, the talented Chef Chris Mattei and his team have been featuring farm-to-table cuisine from products grown and raised right here on MSU’s campus, which have been fun to pair with wines from our extensive list.”

The menu utilizes MSU-raised beef and pork and various produce, herbs, and berries from the MSU Student Organic Farm and the Bailey GREENhouse & Urban Farm. The farms and the culinary team work closely to incorporate seasonal produce as it becomes available, allowing for an ever-changing menu focusing on local, organically raised foods. Keeping in line with their mission, the State Room also features bread and desserts baked right on campus by MSU Bakers, creating a truly unique, one-of-a-kind dining experience.

This is the 18th consecutive year the State Room has won the Best of Award of Excellence. Recipients of this honor display excellent breadth across multiple wine-growing regions, significant vertical depth of top producers, and superior presentation.

“As a leader in the state and the community, we are excited to continue growing our wine list and education at the State Room,” Elayna shared. “We look forward to welcoming the community to future events and dinners to enjoy our many selections.”

Wine Spectator’s special Restaurant Awards issue became available to readers on July 11.
