In its ongoing effort to provide high-quality health care to Michigan, MSU Health Care Sports Medicine is pleased to announce the addition of board-eligible orthopedic spine surgeon Mohamed Salar, MD, who joined the practice August 21, 2023.
“Dr. Salar’s dedication to evidence-based practices and patient-centered approach align with our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve,” said Seth Ciabotti, MSU Health Care chief executive officer. “Dr. Salar's exceptional skills and experience will strengthen our ability to offer comprehensive care to athletes and patients seeking relief from spinal conditions.”
Salar received his doctorate of medicine from Wayne State University in Detroit and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. Salar was selected and trained at the world-renowned Texas Back Institute in Plano, Texas, in their combined orthopedic and neurosurgery spine fellowship.
“We are excited to have Dr. Salar join our team,” said Micah Lissy, MD, MS PT, ATC, CSCS, interim chairperson of the Department of Orthopedics and orthopedic surgeon at MSU Health Care Sports Medicine. “With Dr. Salar on board, we expand our services to encompass spine patients, providing the highest standard of care and helping all patients return to their active lifestyles.”
Salar specializes in adolescent scoliosis screening, management and surgery; cervical, thoracic and lumbar care; degenerative spine disorders; orthopedic trauma and fracture care; revision and trauma spine surgery and spinal instability.
In addition to his clinical practice, Salar serves as assistant professor of orthopedics in Michigan State University Colleges of Human & Osteopathic Medicine, furthering his research in fracture care and orthopedic trauma. Salar has contributed many publications regarding radiation exposure in spine surgery and pediatric patients. In fellowship, he completed a retrospective study looking into the safety of anterior lumbar interbody fusion. Furthermore, he has published several papers emphasizing the importance of temporary external fixation and infection risk.
