U.S. News & World Report recently released its Best College rankings for 2023 showing Michigan State University rose in multiple categories. Among, these, MSU’s ranking for service-learning moved up to No. 9 from 13 overall and is now ranked No. 2 among all public institutions.
The report focuses on service-learning programs that combine academic coursework with the application of institutional resources, like the knowledge of students, faculty/staff, to address challenges communities face through collaborative partnerships.
“Service-learning is one of the tools we use to support students, faculty/staff, and community partners in targeting issues and implementing change,” said Michelle Snitgen, assistant director of the Center for Community Engaged Learning.
Research conducted by U.S. News shows well-regarded service-learning experiences are linked to student success and positive learning outcomes.
“I am so proud of our Spartan community and partners for achieving this remarkable ranking in service-learning,” said CCEL Director Renee Brown. “Each year, there are between 20,000-35,000 student registrations in community-engaged learning both in the classroom and beyond. We deeply value our campus and community partnerships, and we strongly believe it’s our mission to prepare students for lifelong civic and social responsibility.”
