During winter weather conditions, faculty and academic staff, support staff and students who work on-premises should make a reasonable effort getting to and remaining on campus for their regularly scheduled commitments. At the same time, safety is paramount, and all individuals are always advised to use good judgment about travel risks.
For those working during times of heavy snow, remember that parking may be limited to MSU ramps, and drivers should use one of the following campus entrances: Shaw Lane at Hagadorn Road, Shaw Lane at Harrison Road, Collingwood Drive at Grand River Avenue or Mount Hope Road at Farm Lane. These entrances will be high-priority areas for plowing.
While it is rare that the university is forced to modify operations/services, employees need to know their departments’ procedures should this happen. Respective unit leadership should communicate any additional guidance, if applicable. Please note that only the president, or authorized designee, may decide to move to modified operations. Colleges, departments, schools and other campus units cannot move to an official period of modified operations on their own. More information can be found in the Modified Operations Policy and Procedure.
Finally, all benefits-eligible faculty, academic staff, support staff, as well as students with dependents are allocated five days or 40 hours of free or subsidized backup dependent care for children, dependent spouses/partners and elder care per fiscal year (July 1- June 30). Information about the in-home subsidized option and the free care at Bailey Preschool and Childcare Center can be found on the MSU WorkLife Office website. Backup care is first come, first served as space is available. Supervisors and employees are encouraged to utilize the WorkLife flexible work planning toolkit to explore options for flexible work schedules. Contact worklife@msu.edu for questions about backup dependent care.
