An American flag waves proudly in front of the MSU Alumni Memorial Chapel. The interdenominational chapel serves campus as both a spiritual center and a memorial to Spartans who served in wars and perished. On the chapel’s entrance, 487 names are inscribed, with some of the oldest names being those of Spartans who died in the Civil War. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
The East Lansing Art Festival was in full swing this weekend, filling campus and downtown East Lansing with creative energy. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.

Though we’re certainly grateful when sunny days occur on campus, it’s just as nice that MSU’s 20,000 trees provide plenty of shade. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
Whether Michigan weather brings a heat wave or a cold streak, it’s never a bad time for ice cream. Check out the MSU Dairy Store website for store hours and updates — like the addition of their latest ice cream flavor, “What’s the Scoop, Stanley?” Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
Once MSU was aware of the errors on Leveaux’s plaque, the university took action to fix the mistake and properly honor the Spartan’s sacrifice. On May 18, a ceremony was held to dedicate a new plaque, attended by Corporal Leveaux’s family — grandnephew Mark Abbot, niece Mary Abbot, nephew John LesVeaux and his wife Jennie LesVeaux. As we approach Memorial Day and the sacrifices of our fallen heroes weigh on our minds, one Spartan’s legacy received special attention — after more than a century of being inaccurately represented. Class of 1918’s Cosmer Magnus Leveaux was a Spartan who served in WWI and perished in 1918, but when a plaque was dedicated to him on campus in 1919, Leveaux’s name wasn’t spelled correctly and his date of death was incorrect. In late 2020, MSU multimedia coordinator (and primary Week in Photos photographer) Derrick Turner noticed the error and sought to make it right. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
The MSU Main Library appears large and formidable, fitting of a powerhouse of academic resources. And containing 7,805,066 unique print and electronic titles and millions of additional items, the MSU Library is even larger than it seems. Photo by Derrick L. Turner.
