Powwow of Love returns to MSU

By: Henry Mochida

On Oct. 1, the North American Indigenous Student Organization hosted the 37th annual Powwow of Love at the IM East Field. This year’s event is the first powwow since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing together hundreds of community members.

Powwow is a social gathering with dances, feasting and singing held by North American Indigenous and First Nations communities. These gatherings facilitate cultural exchange between other Indigenous cultures across the globe and increases cultural awareness for non-Natives.

MSU celebrates Indigenous Peoples' Day to recognize the presence and the thriving cultures and values of the Anishinaabeg — Three Fires Confederacy of Chippewa (Ojibwe), Ottawa (Odawa) and Potawatomi (Bodéwadmi) peoples — and to honor the historic and contemporary significance of the first inhabitants and their ancestral lands throughout the Americas and all over the world.
