Michigan State University has five national finalists and six nominees for prestigious scholarships and research posts.
MSU has three finalists for the James C. Gaither Jr. Fellows Program, a paid research internship at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for 12-14 graduating seniors or recent graduates to serve as research assistants:
- Abii-tah Chungong Bih, an Honors College senior majoring in international relations, and comparative cultures and politics in James Madison College
- Anthony Luongo, an Honors College senior majoring in international relations in James Madison College and economics in the College of Social Science
- Amina Seydou, an Honors College senior majoring in international relations, and comparative cultures and politics in James Madison College
The Truman Scholarship Foundation recognizes students with exceptional leadership potential who are committed to affecting change through public service by providing them with financial support for graduate study, leadership training and fellowship with other students. MSU’s finalists for the Truman Scholarship are:
- Troy Distelrath, an Honors College junior majoring in comparative cultures and politics, and social relations and policy in James Madison College
- Gregory Marchal, an Honors College junior majoring in economics in the College of Social Science
The MSU nominee for the Beinecke Scholarship is Wisdom Henry, an Honors College junior majoring in history, and urban and regional planning in the College of Social Science. The Beinecke Scholarship pays for graduate school for students pursuing a research-focused graduate program in the arts, humanities or social sciences.
The Goldwater Foundation seeks sophomores and juniors committed to a research career in STEM fields with the potential for significant future contribution in their chosen field. Those students are given funding for undergraduate tuition and living expenses. MSU’s nominees for the Goldwater Scholarship are:
- Charles Hultquist, an Honors College junior majoring in physics and advanced mathematics in the College of Natural Science
- Andrew McDonald, an Honors College junior majoring in computer science in the College of Engineering and statistics and advanced mathematics in the College of Natural Science
- Andrew Norfleet, an Honors College junior majoring in chemical engineering in the College of Engineering and chemistry in the College of Natural Science
- Rachel Steinhorst, an Honors College junior majoring in physics in the College of Natural Science
The nominee for the Udall Scholarship is Elyse Baden, an Honors College sophomore majoring in political theory and constitutional democracy, social relations and policy in James Madison College and interdisciplinary humanities in the College of Arts and Letters. The Udall Foundation awards scholarships to college sophomores and juniors for leadership, public service and commitment to issues related to American Indian nations or to the environment. Each year, the foundation awards up to $7,000 for educational expenses to 60 outstanding students.
The National and International Fellowships and Scholarships Office, administered by the Honors College, helps interested undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international opportunities by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.
