Ten students, four alumni nominated for prestigious graduate school scholarships

Michigan State University has nominated 10 undergraduate students and four alumni for nationally competitive graduate school scholarships: the Churchill Scholarship, the Marshall Scholarship, the Mitchell Scholarship and the Rhodes Scholarship.

All the scholarships support students attending graduate school in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

The MSU nominees for the Churchill Scholarship are:

  • Charles Hultquist, an Honors College senior majoring in Physics and Advanced Mathematics in the College of Natural Science
  • Isabella (Izzy) Ginnett, an Honors College senior majoring in Physics and Advanced Mathematics in the College of Natural Science

Ginnett and Hultquist have also been nominated for the Marshall Scholarship along with:

  • Gabriel Gurulé, an Honors College senior majoring in History in the College of Social Science
  • Vishnu Kannan, a 2020 graduate and Honors College member with bachelor's degrees in International Relations, and Political Theory and Constitutional Democracy in James Madison College; and Economics in the College of Social Science
  • Annaliese Marks, an Honors College senior majoring in Biosystems Engineering in the College of Engineering
  • Andrew McDonald, an Honors College senior majoring in Computer Science in the College of Engineering; and Advanced Mathematics and Statistics in the College of Natural Science;
  • Renold Mueller, an Honors College senior majoring in Mathematics in the College of Natural Science, and Political Science in the College of Social Science
  • Rachael Powers, a 2021 graduate and Honors College member with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology in Lyman Briggs College
  • Anna Savan a 2020 graduate and Honors College member with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry in the College of Natural Science
  • Connor Smeader, an Honors College senior majoring in Forestry, and Fisheries and Wildlife Management in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

Gurulé, McDonald, Mueller, Powers, and Smeader are nominees for the Mitchell Scholarship along with:

  • Troy Distelrath, an Honors College senior majoring in Social Relations and Policy, and Comparative Cultures and Politics in James Madison
  • Christina Liu, an Honors College senior majoring in Environmental Biology-Zoology in the College of Natural Science

The nominees for the U.S. Rhodes Scholarship include Ginnett, Gurulé, Hultquist, Kannan, Marks, McDonald, Powers, Mueller and Smeader, along with:

  • Jasmine Jordan, a 2021 graduate and Honors College member with a BA degree in Political Science in the College of Social Science; and
  • Rafael Paz, an Honors College senior majoring in International Relations in James Madison College.

MSU has produced 16 Churchill Scholars, 20 Marshall Scholars, five Mitchell Scholars and 20 Rhodes Scholars.

The National and International Fellowships and Scholarships (NIFS) Office, administered by the Honors College, helps interested undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international opportunities by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.
