Spartan Lanes to close in spring

Due to declining student usage and escalating maintenance costs, Michigan State University will close Spartan Lanes in the MSU Union at 5 p.m., Friday, May 1, 2020.

Currently scheduled Kinesiology courses and the weekly free events sponsored by the University Activities Board will continue until the end of the spring 2020 semester.

“Spartan Lanes has served a nostalgic role in the history of the MSU Union and holds cherished memories for many students and alumni,” said Michelle Pell, director of the MSU Union. “We are sad to see it go. However, the closure will provide the ability to explore future programming for other relevant activities that meet the needs of current students, future students and guests.”

Prior to the decision, the university gathered feedback from campus student and administrative groups. The structural and operational needs of the space were also reviewed including lane functionality, accessibility and replacement of items that are no longer available.

A process for determining how to better utilize the space will extend through the 2020 fall semester.

A farewell celebration is being planned for later this spring. Updates will be posted at union.msu.edu.
