RSFS offers free online fitness classes

MSU Recreational Sports and Fitness Services is offering free virtual fitness classes for all MSU students, faculty and staff.

These at-home classes include yoga, Zumba, dance, spin, cardio and weight training via three different programs: Zoom, Fitness on Demand and Precor.

“During the academic year, we have an average of 19,000 group fitness participants and another 7,000 fitness center members,” said Jody Strank, assistant director of marketing and adaptive recreation at MSU Recreational Sports and Fitness Services. “We know how important it is for our MSU community to have these exercise options available so they can stay fit and healthy while they finish this semester.”

With the Stay Home, Stay Safe order, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the virtual workouts, Strank said. “Research shows that an active lifestyle reduces stress, and we can all use a little support as we navigate the changes brought by COVID-19.”

Each Zoom class is taught by trained MSU students, faculty and staff instructors. A current schedule of these classes is available at recsports.msu.edu.

“Rec Sports has over 450 total student employees that depend on us financially through the school year,” Strank said. “It is nice to give the instructors the opportunity to work during this closure.”

Recreational Sports and Fitness Services is also offering access to Fitness on Demand, which provides virtual online workouts through a program called Flex.

This system is available on any mobile device or laptop. It offers over 400 workouts taught by professional instructors.

To sign up for Fitness on Demand, those interested must send a request to Rebecca Kegler at kegler@msu.edu with “FOD Online” in the subject line.

Because there are a limited number of seats for this program, attendees must use the system at least two times a week to secure their spot.

Precor is offering virtual studio-quality spin classes with a 60-day free trial.

To access these free classes, visit tv.spinning.com/join. Choose the monthly or annual plan, and enter the code “PRE60DAY.” Billing starts after 60 days and be canceled anytime.

“Recreational Sports and Fitness Services has always had an aggressive goal to offer as much programming and recreational opportunity as possible with the resources we have available,” Strank said. “Thinking outside the box has become second nature to our way of operation. Virtual fitness is just a new way of doing that.”
