Rai Sampson: Landing a dream job

June 1, 2020

Rai Sampson is a recent graduate of MSU's StratCom program in the College of Communications Arts and Sciences. Her next step in life will be working for Google. The following is repurposed content from ComArtsSci.

During my time in the MSU StratCom program I worked for three different companies within a two-year time frame. No, I am not crazy or indecisive, but I had the ability to learn what I liked based on the classes I took at MSU.

When I started the program two years ago, I set a few goals. I wanted to learn as much as possible, make connections with others in the industry and set myself up to be a competitive candidate for my dream job.

The MSU StratCom program taught me how to be a thoughtful leader and to drive effective change. I now know how to set up an effective test control group to do my own research; I can effectively create a logo and wireframe using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator; and I know my strengths after taking the Strengths’ Finders test.

This program pushes you to learn all aspects of communications and marketing. It pushes you to step outside your comfort zone and develop skills you never thought you’d have.

In September 2018, I began my journey to Google. After over 10 interviews, including phone, video and in-person, I am happy to announce that I will be starting with Google one week before I graduate!

It is crazy to think how far I’ve come, but I truly couldn’t have made it without the help of my MSU StratCom family. MSU is known for the saying #SpartansWill. I created my own: "You can and you will."

I hope my story encourages others to follow their dreams, step out of their comfort zone and do what they love.
