Joanne Marciano is an assistant professor in the Department of Teacher Education in the College of Education. Marciano's research supports youth's literacy learning across contexts of secondary English education, urban education and college readiness.
I’m a community engaged literacies scholar committed to conducting research alongside culturally and linguistically diverse youth and ways that build upon and extend their literacy practices while challenging persistent educational inequities. My current work engages qualitative participatory methodologies to examine how the literacy practices, experiences and perspectives of youth of color can be drawn upon as strengths in secondary English education and across multiple contexts of teaching and learning. One way I seek to make an impact is supporting literacy educators in developing more equitable teaching and learning contexts particularly in ways that examine, acknowledge and build with the literacy practices of culturally and linguistically diverse students and their peers, families and communities.
