Dante D. Dixson: Increasing Achievement

Oct. 2, 2019

Dante D. Dixson is an assistant professor in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology and Special Education in the College of Education. Dixson examines the role of hope in the educational and psychological functioning of children and adolescents.

I’m a researcher that wants to change the world by getting students to realize and live up to their full potential. I’ve always believed that if we can get students to hope- if we can get students to at least believe in a powerful tomorrow and have the expectation that they can accomplish a great goal- that has a powerful impact on how they behave today.

My goal is that my work becomes a tier 1 intervention in as many places throughout. If it doesn’t work for every kid, that’s fine. The goal is if we can change student’s perspectives to reach further, that’s the goal. Reach and believe. If we can get them to reach further and then get them to believe that they can accomplish that, it has an overall positive impact.

My goal is to affect as many students as possible. My thoughts are, students are underachieving because they are constantly told they can’t. How about we get them to believe that they can?
