MSU shooting sports club brings home another National Championship

The 2018 Scholastic Clay Target Program American Collegiate National Tournament was held at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, Ohio Oct. 26-28. The event was a great success with over 300 college athletes participating from around the country.

The MSU shooting sports competitive team took the title of Division 3 National Champion in skeet and took bronze in both sporting clays and “High Overall.”

Despite harsh weather conditions, the MSUSSC squad of  Brett Belrose, Greg Reinke Jr., Noah Roth, Ryan Ostrander and Brandon Kade took top honors in American skeet, scoring 968 out of 1000 targets attempted.

In the sporting clays event the squad of Roth, Belrose, Reinke, Kade and Ryan Grunzweig took bronze with a score of 843 out of 1000 targets.

The “High Overall” designation is determined by the total scores across the three American disciplines of skeet, trap and sporting clays. The team scored a total of 2688 out of 3000 targets attempted to clinch bronze in this category.

At only two years since inception, MSUSSC competitive shotgun team has made it clear that they are players nationally. The next major event the team will be attending is the Association of College Unions International National Tournament, which will be held in San Antonio, Texas at the National Shooting Complex March 26–31.

“I am very proud of these athletes. They truly represent the university with honor,” said Matthew Gay, MSUSSC shotgun head coach. “The weather was a factor, but that’s all part of the game. We have demonstrated that we are here to stay and look forward to building our team into a national powerhouse in the shotgun sports.”
