The Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University, or MSU Broad, launched its second annual “Field Station” series Aug. 4.
The “Field Station” series is a yearlong exhibition program designed to push the boundaries of artistic research and interdisciplinary production.
Six artists each year showcase their new projects specifically designed to fuel integration, collaboration and engagement at the MSU Broad and across the many communities it serves. Various forms of educational programming accompany each exhibition to further explore cross-disciplinary approaches.
Detroit-based artist Scott Hocking will be the first artist to kick off the series. Hocking will be making a site-specific installation with railroad ties. The discarded ties, which can be found all over Michigan, are evidence of a once massive network of railroads that used to run through the state.
Hocking will be at the opening reception of his exhibition from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday.

- Ken Grimes: Dec. 1-Feb. 3
- Lawrence Abu Hamdan: Feb. 9-March 31
- Beatriz Santiago-Munoz: April 6-June 2
- Heather Dewey-Hagborg and Philip Andrew Lewis: June 8-July 28
Each artist is given the opportunity to connect with the diverse resources of MSU, resulting in additional opportunities for research, workshops, community engagement, lectures and class participation.
“Field Station” is curated by Carla Acevedo-Yates and Steven Bridges, both associate curators for the MSU Broad.
