The College of Social Science at Michigan State University has announced the creation of a new summer internship program in Flint that will allow students to create sustainable change through internship work.
The Flint Summer Internship Program will run for 10 weeks beginning this year, from June 3 to Aug. 12. The program will require students to work 35 hours per week at one of several potential sites, focusing on a variety of topics including youth programming, education, business development, literacy programs, community revitalization and more.
“MSU has long had an extensive reach into Flint, and this program will enhance our existing interactions,” said Rachel Croson, dean of the College of Social Science. “The diversity and impact of these internships will prove helpful to the city and nonprofit organizations, but also will be excellent opportunities for our students to see how their classroom knowledge can be applied and to acquire new skills.”
There is no program fee to participate, and housing in a University of Michigan – Flint residence hall will be included. Unlike most study away opportunities, the only costs to students are tuition for the credits they earn plus meals and other incidentals. Students living in Flint and the surrounding area can choose to live at home and still participate in the program.
“We value the importance of building a long-term sustainable relationship with our potential partners in Flint. Students may be able to work with organizations as varied as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flint, the Flint Genesee Literacy Network, and the Flint Firebirds Hockey Club,” said Oumatie Marajh, the College of Social Science director of study abroad and study away programs. “This is a pilot program with limited space in this first year. We are looking forward to seeing how students get engaged with these opportunities.”
Participants must apply online, and the deadline for 2017 is April 7. International students are welcome to apply.
