MSU hosts statewide Latinos and media summit

The Julian Samora Research Institute will host the Statewide Latinos and the Media summit, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 15 at the Kellogg Center. The event is free and members of the public are encouraged to attend.

The focus of this year’s event is “The Mass Media and Latinos: Overrepresentation and Underrepresentation,” and will feature Alex Nogales, president and CEO of the National Hispanic Media Coalition.

Nogales is an advocate for Latinos and how they are represented in the media, and has implemented several initiatives focused on improving the status of the media in Latino communities. He is currently evaluating the diversity features of four major television networks, pushing for more diversity in the industry’s workforce and increased representation of Latinos in their shows. Nogales is also challenging the portrayal of Latino immigrants by mainstream media.

Students, faculty and community members are welcome to attend the event and learn more about the mass media and the needs of Latino communities. Space is limited, and registration for the event can be done online
