MSU football returns Friday

Parking lots on the Michigan State University campus designated for football tailgaters will open for business at 3:30 p.m. Friday, as the MSU football team opens the 2016 with a game against Furman University.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.

Lots will remain open three hours after each game.

Spartan fans are reminded of the “open container” ordinance, which bans open containers of alcohol on campus and in all public areas of campus buildings.

However, on home football game days enforcement of the ordinance will be suspended on the main campus for those of legal drinking age, during the hours parking lots are open for tailgating. Munn Field remains alcohol-free, as do pedestrian areas immediately adjacent to Spartan Stadium.

As a reminder, MSU maintains a no-bag policy for Spartan Stadium, which applies to football games. Under the policy, all bags such as purses, diaper bags, camera and binocular cases and other similar bags are prohibited inside the 76,000-seat stadium.

Fans also are reminded that the MSU campus is now 100 percent tobacco free

Tailgaters can visit MSU’s Game Day website for information about tailgating, parking and stadium policies.

MSU faculty, staff and students are reminded that due to this Friday’s game, some normal weekday operations will be affected.

The following parking lots will be closed beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday until 3:30 p.m. Friday, when they will be opened for those holding passes for these lots:

  • Lot 62E and W located on the north side of the IM Sports West and Spartan Stadium
  • Lot 61 located on the west side of Spartan Stadium
  • Lot 79 located on the south side of Spartan Stadium

The other campus lots and ramps will be available for faculty, staff and students with appropriate permits for work- and class-related parking until 1:30 p.m. Friday. After that, MSU Police parking staff will restrict entry into the remainder of the reserved football pass lots.

Faculty and staff who leave these lots during the noon hour should plan to return prior to 1:30 p.m. to ensure re-entry. Alternatively, faculty and staff may obtain passes from their departments to park in designated public lots at no cost.

All parking lots which are designated for football parking will open at 3:30 p.m. Faculty and staff with cars are encouraged to begin leaving campus by 3 p.m. Supervisors are being asked to determine the operational needs of their individual units and, where possible, use flexible schedules so staff may leave campus by that time.

Game-day parking passes which allow faculty and staff to park in public lots for Saturday games will be honored for this game.
