Glenn Chambers is the director of African American and African Studies in the College of Arts & Letters and an associate professor of history. AAAS is a cross-college, university-wide, academic unit offering three degree programs in African American and African Studies.
Michigan State University is one of the key places in the United States, if not the world, in which to study Africa. There’s a long tradition of the Diaspora here, as well as tremendous resources for study and research. Whether it’s the library, established faculty, invited scholar-lecturers, or the various centers, Africa and its Diaspora are highly prominent at MSU.
There is this understanding, here, that you have to produce; you have to do scholarship. However, while very high expectations are placed on you, the institution also gives you the resources to achieve those things. I don’t feel there’s anything I can’t do, research wise, here at Michigan State.
