Staff profiles: Tammy Hazel

Landscape gardener Tammy Hazel’s responsibilities in the athletic areas of campus never stop.

“We have athletes, visitors and teams coming from all over for athletic events,” Hazel said. “So, depending on the sport, I’m doing my other jobs, pulling, cleaning and pruning. When the specific team is going to be starting, I concentrate on their area and get it ready for them.”

Her duties on campus include making sure the building entrances are clean, the plant beds around the entrances are well kept and the whole athletic area is presentable to visitors.

In the winter, Hazel removes snow from the athletic areas and removes leaves in the fall. Hazel has worked for landscape services for 17 years, but has worked at MSU for 25 years.

“My parents worked and retired from here,” she said. “It was an enjoyment for me to come on campus when I was younger and see what my mom and dad did.”

Hazel said her favorite part about her job is when visitors compliment the landscape.

“For the people who see the landscape every day, it’s just something to walk by, but for the visitors, it’s something different.” she said. “When visitors say how beautiful the campus is, that’s what really pleases me.”
