Septic tanks aren't keeping poo out of rivers and lakes: The notion that septic tanks prevent fecal bacteria from seeping into rivers and lakes simply doesn’t hold water, says a new Michigan State University study. Water expert Joan Rose and her team of water detectives have discovered freshwater contamination stemming from septic systems. More >>

2. MSU names new director of WorkLife Office: Michigan State University has appointed the executive director of its newly created WorkLife Office. Assuming the role of executive director and senior adviser to the provost is Barbara Roberts, who currently serves as human rights officer at the University of New Brunswick. Her appointment is effective Aug. 10. More >>

3. MSU fundraising exceeds $238 million for second consecutive year: For the second year in a row, private giving to Michigan State University topped $238 million, continuing the success of the $1.5 billion Empower Extraordinary capital campaign. With a grand total of $238,589,023 in gifts to MSU for the 2014-15 fiscal year, which ended on June 30, it was the second-most successful fundraising year in MSU’s history, second only to the amount raised in the 2013-14 fiscal year of $238,857,024. More >>

MSU veterinarian appointed to USDA advisory committee: Dan Grooms from Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine has been appointed to the USDA Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Animal Health, or SACAH, by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The committee advises Vilsack on matters of animal health and broader issues of public concern.
