Kevin Clinton named MSU Actuarial Science Program director

MSU Actuarial Science Program recently announced Kevin Clinton as its new director.

Clinton assumed his position Aug. 16 and has over 35 years of experience in the financial and insurance industry.

He previously served as Michigan’s 45th treasurer. Prior to that, he was director of the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services where he oversaw new responsibilities regulating Michigan’s financial industry.

Clinton was president of MEEMIC Insurance Company and chief financial officer at ProNational Insurance Company. In 2001, he joined American Physicians Capital, Inc., serving as the company’s vice president and chief operating officer before becoming president and CEO. Clinton earned a bachelor’s in business administration and a master’s degree in actuarial science from the University of Michigan.

Clinton said that he is eager to get started with his new assignment.

“I look forward to working with the faculty and staff to make MSU the premier actuarial science program in the country,” Clinton said.

After its success as a specialization, MSU began offering a bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science in 2012. The program is offered jointly by the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Statistics and Probability, which are housed in the MSU College of Natural Science.

“Kevin Clinton has had a distinguished career in the financial and insurance industry, serving both private and public sectors,” said R. James Kirkpatrick, College of Natural Science dean. “It’s the kind of practical industry expertise that will help him lead the actuarial program to its goals.”

Clinton succeeds Emiliano Valdez, who was the first director of the program. Albert Cohen remains as the assistant program director and its academic director.
