New ISP associate dean for research

International Studies and Programs at Michigan State University welcomes DeAndra Beck as associate dean for research, effective Dec. 1. In this role, Beck will provide leadership in advancing MSU’s strategic international research priorities.

“Dr. Beck comes to us with a unique perspective formed over her impressive career,” said Steven Hanson, associate provost and dean of International Studies and Programs. “Her experience will be critical in helping us connect with strategic partners and funders as we look to the future of international research at MSU.”

Beck is charged with expanding MSU’s role as a leader in international research around key international themes, including food and agriculture, the environment, education and health. She will work closely with ISP’s Office of International Research Collaboration in identifying new funding opportunities and overseeing part of ISP’s portfolio of grant and foundation awards. Beyond campus, she will develop and maintain relationships with key funding agencies, and represent ISP in key international forums.

“MSU enjoys a reputation for leadership and excellence in global engagement, with faculty and students conducting research, learning, teaching and assisting counterparts in more than 60 countries around the world,” said Beck. “I look forward to facilitating these efforts, engaging new partners, and working with faculty and students to advance their international interests.”

Beck’s experience in the government and non-profit sectors spans more than 20 years. Before coming to MSU, she was program director for the National Science Foundation’s Office of International Science and Engineering, with responsibility for NSF’s Developing Country initiatives and the Middle East and Africa portfolios. Prior to joining the NSF, she held leadership positions at the U.S. Millennium Challenge Corp. and the U.S. Forest Service. She facilitated international research and technical assistance for the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service and spent two years at the U.S. Agency for International Development as an American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow.

Beck has received numerous accolades during her career, including five National Science Foundation Director Awards, a World Bank Green Award and a Foreign Agricultural Service Award for International Cooperation. She earned a bachelor of science degree and doctorate in biochemistry from Texas A&M University.
