MSU’s Division of Residential and Hospitality Services invites residents and the local community to recycle and donate unwanted items through “Pack Up, Pitch In, Help Out,” a program designed to promote environmental consciousness during spring semester move-out.
“We encourage our residents to move out with the least environmental impact possible,” said Carla Iansiti, RHS sustainability officer. “Systems are in place to achieve this goal. I challenge our MSU community to Pack Up, Pitch In and Help Out and recycle and donate. Rarely is there an item we cannot reuse or recycle.”
The program accepts plastics, metal, white paper, mixed paper, boxboard, newspaper, glass, wood and carpet. Items collected for donation include clothing, shoes, food, books, bikes, metal futons, household appliances, furniture and e-waste (including all items with batteries or cords). Donated items will be submitted to charitable organizations in the local community. Materials can be deposited at designated on-campus locations and through the MSU Recycling Center.
MSU Residence Halls will have collection through May 7, University Village Apartments will have collection through May 7 and Spartan Village will have collection through May 19.
“Pack Up, Pitch In, Help Out” prevents waste from accumulating in landfills. The program has expanded and now includes the MSU Recycling Center where students and staff can participate. Additionally, portable collection units have been placed in each residence hall for carpet, and metal futon frames that can be placed alongside recycling units.
Organizations involved in this year¹s program include MSU’s Residence Education and Housing Services, MSU Surplus and Recycling Center, MSU Bikes and other on-campus divisions.
