On June 23, 30 teens from across the state will arrive at MSU for the first annual 4-H Animal and Veterinary Science Camp. This five-day, pre-college program will provide youth a unique opportunity to explore MSU farms and facilities to learn about animal and veterinary science.
Campers will explore various animal science-related careers while getting a small taste of college life. They will participate in numerous hands-on activities, gain animal-handling experience and problem-solve in real-life situations.
The camp runs until June 27 for the 13- to 16- year olds. The camp includes the following:
- Zoonotic diseases case study: Campers will receive one of 10 case scenarios that will require them to work in groups to develop a plan to identify, control and prevent zoonotic diseases from spreading to humans. On the last day of camp, groups will present their findings in front of certified veterinarians who will make critiques and offer suggestions.
- Potter Park Zoo and MSU Dairy Farm outings: On June 25 and 26, campers will split into two groups. One group will visit Potter Park Zoo, while the other group will go to the MSU Dairy Farm. The next day, the groups will switch locations. Each group will explore the animal science lessons that pertain to each setting.
- Camp Tours: Campers will visit various MSU facilities and laboratories including the sheep and dairy farms, the Diagnostic Lab and the Veterinary clinic. Here they will be able to witness firsthand where professionals and students practice their crafts.
