Staff profiles: David Giordan

David Giordan’s brain has always understood the world through illustrations.

“It’s how I think,” said Giordan, a graphic designer for MSU’s University Advancement. “I’ve never been good with numbers, I’ve never been a great speller, but I’ve been able to draw and paint and sketch.”

While he has created many images in his career, his love for one of them in particular qualifies him for his current job.

“Drawing Sparty is just a riot,” Giordan said. “It really is just one of the most enjoyable things that I do.”

To promote MSU’s super-hero-themed homecoming, Giordan created artwork for a league of Spartan super heroes led by Sparty himself.

Sparty’s four sidekicks — Epic, The Muse, Cognos and The Sower — each represent some of the history, traditions and values of Michigan State.

“Athletics, research and academics, our agricultural roots…we said ‘how can we embody those things into our super hero characters,” Giordan said. “Each one of the super heroes takes on an aspect of what make the university great.”

Giordan said he is happy in his current job and enjoys working with his peers in communications. While his imagination has proven to be extensive, there was one thing he admitted even he couldn’t dream up.

“I can’t imagine doing anything else,” Giordan said. “Taking ideas and building communications and stories out of them is just the coolest thing.”
