MSU veterinarian wins prize for knee surgery

A Michigan State University professor is the first veterinarian to receive a prize recognizing lifetime contributions to the art and science of knee surgery.

Steven Arnoczky, Wade O. Brinker Endowed Professor of Surgery in MSU’s College of Veterinary Medicine, is the fifth recipient of the Werner Müller International Knee Prize. The award is named for Professor Werner Müller from Basel, Switzerland, whose pioneering work in knee anatomy, function, and ligament reconstruction is the foundation on which current surgical techniques of the knee are based.

Arnoczky is director of MSU’s Laboratory for Comparative Orthopaedic Research. His research group focuses on sports-related injuries and has developed several new repair and reconstruction techniques currently in clinical use in both animals and humans.

Arnoczky received the award at the 2013 meeting of the Magellan Society in conjunction with the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine meeting held in Toronto May 12-16.
