It's simple – if you're a Spartan you're a born super hero and if you weren't born one you at least have this sense of urgency to become one and Spartans are able to accomplish this in a number of ways.
One way in particular is being a Destination Detroit super hero. If you're not familiar with Destination Detroit, it is a relatively new registered student organization that is a groundbreaking initiative focused on building bridges between diverse student groups through meaningful service that engages Detroit students.
Several students groups have been involved with Destination Detroit such as the Black Student Alliance, Arab Cultural Society, Jewish Student Union, Ask Big Questions, Asian Pacific Student Organization and Culturas de las Razas Unidas.
Our Spartan super heroes provide academic, artistic and athletic enrichment in partnership with city schools, while serving as college-positive role models.
What makes Destination Detroit even more amazing is the time spent in Detroit learning about grassroots organizations and having the opportunity to visit Detroit landmarks and dine at local hot spots.
As an intern for Destination Detroit and an active participant, I have had the opportunity to witness its impact not only on our own community but the Detroit area as well. As former president of the Arab Cultural Society, for quite some time I felt as though the only group I was a part of was the Arab Cultural Society. After joining Destination Detroit I became so well connected to all my other peers and student organizations and I truly felt like I was part of the Michigan State community and I am.
Spartans are super heroes and we make an impact on this world everyday. That's what makes us special and that's why our homecoming theme Creating Spartan Super Heroes couldn't be more perfect.
