Janisse Patino-Martinez is a senior from Miami, Fla., majoring in communications and a 2013-14 MSU Homecoming Court Ambassador.
Four years ago I made a commitment to myself that one day I would be on the Michigan State Homecoming Court. There are about 48,000 students at MSU, and four years ago I began the journey to distinguish myself, achieve this goal and—most importantly—enjoy the ride.
I am a first-generation college student and a daughter of a single immigrant mother. I was born and raised in beautiful Miami and came all the way to MSU for a brighter future. You see, in my family the women marry young and take charge of the household. MSU gave me the opportunity to change that trend and further my education. I now have aspirations to make a positive impact anywhere I go and take steps to better myself as an individual. I am determined to showcase what MSU is all about—giving students like me life-changing opportunities.
My mentor once told me, "MSU is home to one of the most talented, creative and hardworking student communities you'll find." I couldn't agree more about the diverse culture and that is why I wanted to be a Homecoming Court ambassador. MSU students and their experiences speak volumes from all over world.
My goal was embedded in my experiences and I am proud to say I achieved it! The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don't define them or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. I want my story to be a gateway to any student and community member.
As an ambassador my duties will be to represent the MSU student body at various alumni, community and university engagements. This commitment will be throughout the 2013-14 school year. Homecoming Court ambassadors will share their Spartan pride at various summer events and during homecoming week, Oct. 7-12. We will attend many functions, including the parade on Oct. 11 and the football game on Oct. 12.
I am just a snapshot of the diversity of Spartan spirit. My peers say I will go places, but it took the education and opportunities at MSU to convince me I can now rule the world!
