Elliot Zirulnik: Maximizing creative potential

July 11, 2013

Elliot Zirulnik is a media and information senior from Royal Oak, Mich., who is a 2013-14 Homecoming Court Ambassador and president of the Council of Students with Disabilities.

When you hear the word “disability,” what thoughts run through your mind?

Anyone who has had the pleasure of working with the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities, or RCPD, will tell you about an incredible group of Spartans who have maximized their ingenuity and creative potential.

Although many members of the MSU community are familiar with the RCPD, very few have an understanding of the process through which accommodations for students are identified and implemented.

Last fall, I was tasked with producing two videos for the department—one chronicling a student’s experience with RCPD and completing Verified Individualized Services and Accommodations forms and another from the perspective of faculty.

Before I even began the script, I made sure to consult with individuals from both parties as well as numerous RCPD specialists. After several weeks of scriptwriting and careful revisions, the cameras were ready to roll!

I have two hopes for these videos. First, I want to relate the accommodations process to students and faculty in a digestible manner. Second, I want to heighten the greater community’s awareness of the critical role persons with disabilities play at MSU.

So did I reach my goals? You tell me!
