Army vet competes for national public policy scholarship

Kent Dell, a Michigan State University junior, has been nominated by faculty to compete for the 2013 Harry S. Truman Scholarship.

His nomination was based on leadership potential, academic achievement and commitment to public service.

Dell, a graduate of Fowler High School, is an Honors College member majoring in public policy in the College of Social Science. Dell was a recent intern at the Michigan House of Representatives Republican Policy Office. He’s an instructor for the U.S. Army Reserves in Fraser and is currently working as an undergraduate research assistant for Cynthia Jackson-Elmoore, dean of the Honors College.

“It is always a pleasure to nominate talented and dedicated leaders for the Truman Scholarship. Because of my work with Kent, this year’s nomination comes with special joy and excitement for me,” Jackson-Elmoore said. “Kent is a serious student and servant leader who cares deeply about ensuring the viability and accessibility of services for veterans and disabled individuals. His passion is palpable. I have no doubt that he has the intellect, ability, tenacity and drive necessary to bring about positive change.”

Dell has volunteered more than 120 service hours at the Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities and served as president of the MSU Tower Guard and president of the MSU Chapter of Student Veterans of America from 2011-2012. He is passionate about addressing the issue of homelessness among veterans and hopes to eventually serve Michigan as a legislator. Dell plans to pursue a master’s degree in public policy.

The Harry S. Truman Scholarship is a highly competitive federal award granted to U.S. college juniors for demonstrated leadership potential and a commitment to public service. The scholarship provides $30,000 toward graduate study. It’s awarded annually to about 60 students.

The National/International Fellowships & Scholarships office at MSU, administered by the Honors College, helps interested students (graduate and undergraduate) to pursue major national and international opportunities.
