Pre-college program brings youth to MSU campus

More than 2,500 students and adult chaperones will be on the Michigan State University campus June 19-21 for the 44th annual 4-H Exploration Days.

This pre-college program is for students ages 11 to 19 and adult volunteers from all over Michigan. Participants stay in residence halls and attend sessions in their areas of interest ranging from veterinary medicine to web design, performing arts, environmental education and many more. More than 200 hands-on classroom and field trip sessions are offered.

Michigan’s largest annual 4-H event, Exploration Days is designed to help students learn new ideas and techniques, increase their interest in and readiness for college, explore career options, and develop decision-making, independence and teamwork skills. They also meet and interact with people from different backgrounds and areas throughout Michigan. 4-H volunteers and staff are on hand to provide oversight and guidance.

When not in action-packed learning sessions, students will have a plethora of recreation and MSU facility tour choices including the MSU Breslin Center, Demmer Center, Broad Art Museum, National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and 4-H Children¹s Garden. There will be exciting opening night entertainment at the Wharton Center for Performing Arts featuring a high-energy magic show by The Magic Stu, an award-winning illusionist. There will also be a formal State 4-H Awards Celebration on June 20 to celebrate the accomplishments of more than 160 Michigan 4-H members.

The fee to attend is $165; youth not enrolled in 4-H pay an additional $10 4-H participation fee (local scholarship support may be available). Those interested in attending, whether 4-H members or not, should contact their county MSU Extension office at 1-888-MSUE-4MI. Sessions are assigned on a first-come, first-basis so early registration is encouraged. The registration deadline is April 30.
