MSU community urged to ‘dim down’ in April

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University’s Office of Campus Sustainability is asking the campus community to turn off nonessential lights and electronics from noon to 1 p.m. every Friday in April, beginning this Friday, as part of the annual Dim Down program.

This is the fifth year of the program, which is designed to encourage faculty, staff and students to engage in collaborative energy conservation. The program is modeled after international energy action, World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour.

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to turn off computer components and peripherals; non-emergency lights; chargers and docking stations; machines such as laminators and electric staplers; food and beverage appliances; audio/video equipment; and comfort appliances such as fans and heaters

Last year, the MSU community reduced energy usage by more than 4 percent as a result of Dim Down. Physical Plant will track electrical consumption again this year.

More information is available at www.bespartangreen.msu.edu/dimdown.html.  A list of suggested activities for employees to do while it’s dim in the office also is available.

Dim Down is among many programs that help MSU reduce energy. View more ways that MSU is managing energy by visiting www.energytransition.msu.edu.
