EAST LANSING, Mich. — For the second year in a row, Michigan State University students who live in Spartan Village will not see an increase in monthly rates.
Meanwhile, 2012-13 room-and-board rates for freshman, transfer and returning students who live on campus and select the silver unlimited meal plan will see a 3.95 percent increase, which is lower than last year and the lowest rate increase since the 2000-01 academic year.
The rate adjustments were approved by the MSU Board of Trustees at its April 13 meeting.
Under the new rates, Spartan Village Apartments’ one- and two-bedroom apartments will remain unchanged at $650 and $774 a month respectively. Located on the east side of campus, Spartan Village provides an apartment atmosphere combining the benefits of proximity to campus with university staff.
Basic residence hall room and board rates will be $8,476 for freshman, transfer and returning students who select a meal plan that gives students unlimited access to 11 residential dining halls, as well as access to 23 culinary services retail locations. The increase is $322 over last year’s rate.
“Keeping housing and dining rates affordable for our students, especially during these difficult economic times in Michigan, is essential,” said Vennie Gore, assistant vice president for Residential and Hospitality Services. “This rate increase attempts to strike a reasonable balance between affordability, enhanced service for students and the renovation of aging facilities.”
MSU’s room and board rates continue to be among the lowest of all universities in Michigan and the Big Ten. Despite significant global food and fuel cost increases, the residence hall rates represent less of an increase than last year.
More than 14,000 students will live in MSU’s residence halls in 2012-13. Two residence halls – Armstrong and Bryan in the Brody Neighborhood – are scheduled to close for renovation from May 2012 until June 2013. Meanwhile, two other halls that closed last year for renovation – Bailey and Rather, also in the Brody Neighborhood – will reopen in July.
In addition, the Shaw Hall dining facility will be closed for extensive renovations from May 2012 to January 2013.
