Mosaic of memories

EAST LANSING, Mich - The College of Arts and Letters celebrated its 50th anniversary by getting the MSU community involved in the festivities.

“The theme for the celebration is ‘A Mosaic of Cultural Life,’” said Danielle DeVoss, professor of professional writing in the College of Arts and Letters.

DeVoss, along with several other members of the College of Arts and Letters, celebrated the theme by creating a “CAL” mosaic for the MSU community to decorate. People walking by were invited to select a piece of wood, glass or other materials to glue on the board until the project was complete.

“In adopting this theme we are hoping to celebrate the ways in which the college has continually celebrated preforming arts; written, spoken and aesthetic ways of sharing meaning and thinking in a global and interdisciplinary context,” DeVoss said.

The celebration had a large turnout, including a visit from Sparty, who stopped by to add a piece to the mosaic.

DeVoss said she hopes the mosaic will find a home in the College of Arts and Letters and in different places all over campus.

“We really hope this will be a moving artifact and a gift we can share across the college,” she said. “We are hoping it will be passed along from department to department, from building to building.”
