MSU collects eight awards at Michigan Emmys

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Michigan State University won eight Emmy awards this past weekend from the Michigan Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. The winners included several students and a documentary examining MSU’s efforts to fight malaria in Africa.

"Malawi and Malaria: Fighting to Save the Children" collected two awards – one for best documentary-cultural and one for best writing.

The documentary was produced by Bob Gould and Sue Carter from MSU’s College of Communication Arts and Sciences’ School of Journalism. In addition, Carter won the writing award for the documentary.

Student winners were Focal Point, a student-produced news program that won for college/university student production – news; and a documentary – "Publicly Defended: Michigan’s Fight for Public Defender Reform" – which won for best college/university student production – non-news programs.

In addition, student Jeffrey Wisenbaugh took home an Emmy in a non-student category – on-camera talent – performer/narrator. A piece titled "He Thinks he’s Funny" was submitted which was a compilation of work he did for several MSU projects.

The university’s MSU Today team also won for:

"Izzo Goes to Broadway" – arts/entertainment

"MSUToday in Studio: Mohammed’s Journey" – interview/discussion

"Mohammed" – documentary-topical

The Academy awarded more than 80 statues recognizing excellence in areas ranging from newscasts, editing, photography, audio, lighting and commercial production.
