EAST LANSING, Mich. — Madaleine Norman, a 10th-grader at Okemos High School, was selected as the winner of the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center's annual holiday card contest.
Norman is an art student in Rebecaa Butler's class. She drew, by hand, a cartoon graphic of footprints in the snow spelling MSU.
"At first I wasn't sure what to do," said Norman. "But deep snow and the state of Michigan go well together. I then added the ‘MSU' since it's for the Kellogg Center."
Now in its 18th year, in 2000 the contest was expanded to include students in the greater-Lansing area.
Kellogg Center department leaders select the contest winner each year based on creativity and originality. The contest winner receives $100 and his or her card design is framed and hung in the Kellogg Center's lobby throughout the holiday season.
About 2,000 cards featuring Norman's design will be sent to various MSU departments, The State Room Restaurant, Kellogg Center guests and community members shortly after Thanksgiving.
"The contest is intended to bring the community together and spread some goodwill during the holiday season," said Joel Heberlein, Spartan Hospitality Group director and contest creator. "Looking through them was a great way to kick off the season."
The Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center is a unit of the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services.
